<image:caption>I am a Senior Lecturer in Strategic Studies at Deakin University. I received my PhD from the University of Queensland in 2019 and my MA in Conflict Resolution from Georgetown University in 2012. I consider myself a practitioner-academic, conducting both research and implementing projects.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Home - Research</image:title>
<image:caption>I have two areas of active research. The first focuses people-centric and state-centric conceptions of sovereignty at the international level and as enacted by humanitarian and military interventions. This includes civilian protection in the face of terrorist threats, post-colonial investigations of the extension of state authority by peacekeepers, the role of parallel deployments, and UN Police and countering violent extremism. My second research project investigates politics and misogyny, specifically terrorism in the form of attacks by involuntary celibates or ‘Incels’ and the importance of feminist foreign policy</image:caption>

      <image:title>Research - Peacekeeping as Worldmaking</image:title>
<image:caption>The aim of this research is to show that contemporary stabilisation operations demonstrate the continued debate around the nature and role of the state, in particular between state-centric and human-centric understandings of sovereignty. Stabilisation actors rarely have a clearly articulated vision of state they are pursuing. At one end of the spectrum are neo-imperialist to traditional realist approaches focused on the power-based role of the state. At the opposite end of the spectrum are liberal internationalist approaches focused on state legitimacy earned through state services. The multiple actors in peace operations often pursue different conceptions of the state based on their interests and history rather than an unified UN conception of the state. The result in that multiple visions of the ‘state’ are simultaneously being pursued. Which of these visions ultimately triumphs will determine the nature of the state being built. This Research project stems from my PhD work and includes my forthcoming book on extending state authority by peacekeepers, and articles on peacekeeping as state-building, the role of coalitions of the willing in peacekeeping, and peace operations and countering violent extremism.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Research - Misogyny as Violent Extremism</image:title>
<image:caption>Extreme misogyny has found a home on the ‘Manosphere’ and begun to thrive. The result has been the emergence of a violent political misogyny that follows the same pattern of dehumanization and incitement to violence as other violent extremist groups. The only difference is that the targets of this violence are determined by their gender and gender roles. Despite this, violence stemming from misogynistic ideology continues to be understood as a domestic or individual issue. This project consists of a series of papers designed to interrogate different aspects of misogyny as a motivating factor for violent extremism. This includes articles on the political ideology of ‘Involuntary celibates’, violent political misogyny as a violent extremism, and violent political misogyny as a national security threat. <image:title>Service - Deputy President, Women in International Security - Australia</image:title>
<image:caption>Women In International Security Australia (WIIS-A) is an affiliate of Women in International Security (WIIS) – the premier organization in the world dedicated to advancing the leadership and professional development of women in the field of international peace and security. Since the founding of WIIS in 1987, women have advanced to increasingly important roles in the field of international security. There are new and expanding opportunities for women’s participation globally, as women are present in greater numbers in foreign and defense affairs and now occupy important positions in governments around the world. In recent years, the international community has recognized the important contributions of women to peace and security and has made commitments to include women in peace and security decision-making at all levels. But equal representation of women is not yet a reality, especially at senior levels of policymaking.</image:caption>
